The year was 1969. The race was the Tour De France. The man was Eddy Merckx. Never in the history of cycling has one person dominated a race the way Merckx did on this occasion. It was his first Tour De France. He won the General Classification by over 17 minutes. He won 6 stages consisting of 3 mountain stages and 3 individual time trials. He won the Points, King of the Mountains, Combined & Combativity jerseys too. His team, Faema, won the Team classification. It was an unprecedented clean sweep. A display of total dominance. A man at the top of his game. He was ruthless and relentless, leaving no scraps for the rest of the peloton to fight over. Shortly after this Tour Merckx gained the nickname 'Le Cannibale' which stuck his entire career. Quite simply, the GOAT (greatest of all time), a legend.
