This tee celebrates the last of the cycling seasons' 'monuments', Il Lombardia, one of the most prestigious one-day events in cycling. The race is affectionately known as 'La Classica Delle Foglie Morte' (the race of the falling leaves) due to it's position in the UCI calendar of mid October. The first edition was held in 1905 and it's been held every year apart from 1943 & 1944 due to WWII. The most famous climb on the parcours is the Madonna del Ghisallo, starting from near Bellagio at the shore of Lake Como and heading up to the church at the top, at 10.6km long and averaging 5.2% it's often the catalyst for attacks. The church itself is a sanctuary to cyclists now serving as a museum full of religious and cycling-related objects. And the Madonna herself is the patron saint of cyclists, well.... all travellers to be precise. But we've claimed her as ours and long may she look over us and protect us from harm.
