Campagnolo was founded in 1933 by Tullio Campagnolo in Vicenza, Italy. Tullio was a racing cyclist in Italy in the 1920's. On November 11th 1927, when Tullio found himself alone ahead of his competitors, he prepared to climb the first steep slopes of the Croce d'Aune pass. On that freezing morning his hands were so numb from the cold that he couldn't loosen up the hub wing nuts to disengage the wheel and shift into an easier gear. Then and there, Tullio had a stroke of genius: he would redesign the nuts lever to make the release more straightforward. His idea came into fruition on February 8th 1930 when his quick release system was patented, and its production started in 1933. That year, Tullio Campagnolo founded the Campagnolo company, headquartered in the back room of his father's hardware store in the city of Vicenza. That was the beginning of what would become the trademark evolution of modern cycling. Decades on and 135 patents for innovation later, the company continues to thrive. The 2021 Tour De France, won by Tadej Pogacar for UAE Team Emirates, was the 43rd Tour victory for the Italian component manufacturer. A great example of Italian tradition and design excellence.
