The Tour of Flanders, the brutal Flemish cobbled classic. Dating back to 1913 and only missing the WW1 editions it is a cycling institution, integral to the people and culture of the region. The race is characterised by the narrow, twisting cobbled climbs or 'hellingen' that shape the outcome of the race. The race onto each of these sectors is a war, riders shoulder to shoulder not giving an inch. The wide roads give way to small farm roads with sharp 90 degree corners leading onto the pave. Positioning is key. If you're not at the front you're not in the race. The hellingen are iconic. The Oude Kwaremont, Koppenberg & Paterberg, all just south of the town of Oudenaarde, are the heart of the action. These climbs are poorly paved and visciously steep in places. The fans covering every inch of the roadside creating a carnival-like atmosphere, a cacophony of noise and colour. All these factors combine to make this one of the hardest and yet most beautiful races on the calendar. But don't take our word for it, here's how US Postal rider George Hincapie described the race....
"The Tour of Flanders is unlike any other bike race in the world. It is, without question, the hardest one-day bike race ever created. What seems like a million corners, combined with twenty to thirty steep pitches and narrow roads, none of which go the same direction for more than a mile, all mix together to make it war on a bike. Flanders may as well be a different sport"
Our tee celebrates this great race showing loud and proud the Lion of Flanders, the iconic emblem of the region.
