Strade Bianche (Italian for 'white roads'), the iconic race that is played out over Tuscany's historic white gravel 'sterrati', traditionally 11 sectors totalling 63 kilometres. The parcours twists through the hills and vineyards of the beautiful Chianti region. The finish too is a stunner located in Siena's illustrious Piazzo del Campo, after a steep and narrow climb on the roughly paved Via Santa Caterina leading into the centre of the medieval city. It's held annually on the first Saturday in March as an early Spring precursor to the cobbled classics that follow in April. It's timing on the calendar makes it prone to poor weather, the white gravel descending into mud and adding to the spectacle. The finishers look like warriors from a bygone time. Paradoxically it's a young event, dating back only to 2007 but it's become an instant classic, garnering much media attention and becoming a key target on the palmares of the top riders. Alaphilipe, Van Aert, Van der Poel, Pogacar and Pidcock as the last 5 winners are testament to that showing the race's pedigree. Our tee celebrates the newest of the enduring Spring races - classic by nature, but not yet by name.
